Gestalt Language Processing
At the ASHA convention we attended a few presentations about Gestalt Language Processing and a few things stood out to me:
Any child has to feel safe and regulated before they can learn with you- collaboration with OT to help with regulation can be huge!
Gestalt Language Learners are learning language through EVENTS. Will labeling pictures of animals generalize to that child naming animals when playing with a farm? Be mindful and make sure your language activities are natural and allow for generalization.
I thought of a few of my kiddos with autism that express entire sentences from shows and events! Despite scripting entire sentences they actually need some help learning the individual meaning of words! And we can help them do this!
Identify the stage of Natural Language Acquisition so you can choose appropriate therapy targets and supports- check out one of our free presentations for more information on this!
