Shared Book Reading

Below are some tips for reading with your child based on their age:

Birth to 1 year of age: Read touch and feel books.  Help your child feel the different pictures.  Point to pictures and label them for your child.  Allow your child to turn the pages in the book.

1 to 3 years of age: Enjoy books with some good repetition in the story, such as Goodnight Gorilla, Where's Spot, and Brown Bear.  Pause when reading to provide your child an opportunity to fill in a word.  Ask your child to find different pictures on the pages.

3 to 5 years of age: Read narrative stories that have a beginning, middle, and end.  Some examples include: Grumpy Monkey, Don't Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus, and Dragons Love Tacos.  Your child can go to the library with you to pick out books they find interesting.  You can read the story to your child and ask them questions about the details.  Trace your finger under the words as you read to help your child understand we read left to right.  Your child can also pretend to read you the story using the pictures as visual support.

Check out your local library! We love visiting Helen Kate Furness Library, Ridley Township Public Library, and Media Upper Providence Library.
